Vastu is an ancient Indian science of architecture and buildings which helps in making a congenial or a place to live and work in a most scientific way taking advantage of the benefits bestowed by nature, its elements and energy fields for enhanced wealth, health, prosperity and happiness. Through art of design, he alters and molds the elements of natural environment. The world comprises of five basic elements, also known as the Paanchbhootas. They are Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Space. Out of the nine planets, our planet has life because of the presence of these five elements. Earth and Water have limited and localized availability for the human habitat and growth. They form apparent and fundamental choice makers in the location and the physical form of architecture and habitat. Sun, Air and Space are universally available and can be molded to human needs by the act of design. In order to understand the act of design with these five elements, we shall have to take each one separately to appreciate their meaning, role, and workability in architecture. Earth, the third planet in order from the sun, is a big magnet with North and South poles as centers of attractions. Its magnetic field and gravitational force has telling effects on everything on the Earth, living and non-living. It is tilted by about 23.5 degrees at the meridian. It comprises of the land structure, landform, landscape, flora and fauna. It also establishes availability of local construction materials and their workability. In India, we worship our Bhumi and give her a place of our mother. Water is represented by rain, river, sea and is in the form of liquid, solid (ice) and gas (steam, cloud). It forms part of every plant and animal. Our blood is nothing but water with hemoglobin and oxygen. The habitat and physical life are where water is present. This is true for all life forms and eco-cultures. The type, form and pattern of life also greatly depend on relationship of earth and water. If we see our history, all the cultures had developed on the bank of any water bodies, so this shows the influence of the water on our life, since ages. As a life-supporting element, air is very powerful life source. Pure air with oxygen is good for brain and blood. Atmosphere of earth which is about 400 kms. , In depth, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon-di-oxide, Helium, other gases, dust particles, humidity and vapor in certain proportions. Human physical comfort values are directly and sensitively dependent on correct humidity, airflow, and temperature of air, air pressure, air composition and its content. In this aspect, air deals with the entire body surface through skin, blood system - through respiration. Air also represents the movement. Fire(Sun) represents light and heat without which the life will extinct. All the days and nights, seasons, energy, enthusiasm, passion, vigor is because of light and heat only. Sun is a source of mental energy too. Best minds evolve in a natural process where the sun was temperate. Not very hot, not very cold, just the right temperature of 24 degrees. • Choose a plot that doesn't have an irregular shape. Square or rectangle shape plot is considered good. Make sure that the plot doesn't have any cracks.

• A plot that has more length in the east or west direction is good for purchasing purpose.

• As per vastu, buying of such a plot that has more of open space in southern portion as compared to the northern side is not suggested, as it is likely to cause some sort of destruction.

• It is advisable to buy a plot that has the main entrance in the mid-west or in the northern portion of the plot.

• It is not recommended to buy a plot facing the west direction.

• A plot-facing road from all sides is considered auspicious.

• People of different occupations are affected by certain directions chosen for plot. For instance, a plot facing east is considered favorable for scholars, philosophers, priests, teachers and professors. For people handling administration of a firm, selecting a plot facing north is good. Government employees can also choose a plot facing north. In case you are a business person, then purchase a plot that faces south. For the people providing services to the society, opting for a plot facing west is good.

• According to vaastu shasthra, fertile plot with greenery surrounding it is considered auspicious.

• Make sure that there is no graveyard or tomb in the front, back or adjacent to your plot.

• Avoid the plot that is located in the vicinity of schools, colleges or cinema theatre.

• Do not purchase a plot, to which rain water from the roof of the neighborhood falls.

• Make sure that there is not tall building located in the north eastern side of your plot, because it would ruin your mental peace. However, if the high-rise building is located in the south, south west or western side, you may purchase the plot.

• Avoid purchasing a plot with rivers or canal flowing on west or south side of the plot.

• Make sure that there is no pillar, electric or post nearby your plot.

Before shifting or starting to Live or work in any new place it is very important to perform a Vaastu Puja. To Start any work that is related to Bhumi (Land), laying of foundation stone, starting excavation and construction, fixing the main door should be done on particular dates of specific months, where the aspect of Vaastu is oriented so as to make the house fit for human habitation with ease and comforts, health and longevity, peace and prosperity. Vaastu Purush must be remembered and worshipped while starting any new Construction or Renovation.

• The excavation / digging of the foundation should always be done in the North-East, the logic behind this principle is to keep the North-East level low and light.

• The foundation stone should either be laid in the Ishaan i.e. Northern-Eastern part of the entire plot or it should be laid in the northeastern part of the layout of the proposed house. The foundation stone should be taken to South-West corner and building construction should be started using that stone only as the first foundation stone.

• Construction of foundation wall should not be started in North-East. Construction work of any building is to be started always only after Vaastu Puja

• The construction of building should start at South-West, proceeds towards North-West / South-East and should end at North-East.

Effects of Building a house in specific months of the year

• March-April - Results in financial loss and fearfulness.

• April-May -  It will bring good results.

• May-June - It will lead to the fear of death.

• June-July - It will result in the loss of cattle wealth.

• July-August - Good for the welfare of the family.

• August-September - Good for the welfare of the family.

• September-October - It will result in unnecessary fight and enmity.

• October-November - Ensure acquisition of wealth.

• November-December - Cause fear of many things.

• December-January - Results in fear of fire and other troubles.

• January-February - Good for the entire family.

• February-March - Ensure gain in wealth & richness,etc.

Effects of starting Construction in a specific Day

• Sunday - Fear of Fire.

• Monday(Shukla Paksha) - Happiness & all around prosperity.

• Monday(Krishna Paksha) - Should not start the work at all.

• Tuesday - Bad Effects,fear of fire & death.

• Wednesday - Gain in wealth and richness, happiness, family welfare etc.

• Thursday - Long life, happiness & children will attain name and fame.

• Friday - Happiness & peace of mind, full of good activities and functions.

• Saturday - Even if the life of the building will be long, life of inmates will
  be full of debt, sorrow, misery, laziness and other bad effects.

Gruha Pravesh

Once the construction work is complete, the next step to be taken is the "Gruh Pravesh".

• For the Gruh Pravesh to the new house, the months of January-February, February-March, April-May, May-June are considered most auspicious and bring all the benefits.

• All days except Tuesdays (Sunday, Saturday in some part of India) are considered auspicious.

• The Gruha Pravesh should always be done in the day time. It is essential to fix up "Muhurat" for everything if we want smooth-sailing success, prosperity, progress and peace of mind.

The meaning of vastu is dwelling, which is the home for god and humans. Vastu shastra is based on various energies that comes from atmosphere like solar energy from sun, cosmic energy, lunar energy, thermal energy, magnetic energy, light energy, wind energy. These energies can be balanced to enhance peace, prosperity and success. If a house is made according to these principles, the inmates enjoy all the happiness in life. Vastu For Bedroom

It is best to have the bedrooms in the south, south west (nairuthi) and west. At no cost should the bed room be built in the northeast (Eshan ) corner, maximum try to avoid placing of bed rooms at east or north directions . If the house owner has occupied this bedroom it is not good for the house owner's health and the financial matter. People sleeping in southeast (agneya) towards east side bedrooms suffer from sleeplessness, anxiety and short temper. The owner sleeping in northwest (vayavya) bed rooms suffers instability, financial losses, unneccessary headaches from his working areas i.e., his office, shop, lodge or hotels , factories etc. It is best for the house owner to sleep in the Southwest room and in case not possible in the South bed room or West bed room, if the owner has occupied at these southwest corner bedroom, or south bedroom, or at west bedroom then his position will raise day by day, his works will go smooth, his words has some attraction, he has capability in maintaining his family members or his staff. Some Tips for Bedroom Vastu:

• If the head is towards the South then, Sound sleep and lesser tensions, the health improves.

• If the head is towards the East, then improvement in knowledge.

• If the head is towards the West, then ill health.

• If the head is towards the North, then bad dreams, ill health and disturbed sleep.

• The cupboard in the room's to be placed at West direction.

• The bed in the room is at Southwest corner.

• The dressing table in the room's Southeast or Northwest corner.

• The cupboard in the room may be at South or west or southwest.

• Place the bed at south, west or southwest.

• The cooler at the room is towards southeast or northwest direction, if not possible then place this one    at north or east directions but it should not touch the wall at these directions.

• The flooring should be higher than the remaining house flooring.

• Bath room should be at southeast corner or northwest corner, with some care it may be placed at nairuthi also.

Vastu For Bathroom

According to bathroom vastu, bathroom is located in North or North-West portion of the house. If bathroom is located in wrong direction, it can cause health and financial problems. Bathroom should not be in South, South-East and South-West direction. South sided bathroom can cause adverse effects on the health of female members. As per Toilet Vastu, toilet should be located in west or northwest direction. Avoid construction of toilet at the centre and in the east, northeast of the house. The toilet seat should be placed in such a way that the person sitting could face the North or the South. Now a day toilet combined with bathroom is becoming popular due to lack of space. Combined bathroom and toilet should be in north-west direction. It should not be adjacent to Pooja Room, kitchen and under the stairs. Geyser and other electrical appliances like heater and switchboard should be installed in south- east corner of bathroom. Taps and showers are fixed in north direction. Placing bath tubs in east, west or north-east direction is good. Wash basin and shower can be either in north-east, north or east direction. The North is a good direction for vanity mirror. Water closet should be placed in the West and the South direction of the toilet. A water closet should be placed near a window or an outer wall. Exhaust fans are necessary if there is no window in the bathroom. The slope of bathroom floor should be in the North. It should not to be in south-west or south-east direction. Septic tank should be in northwest of the house. It should not be in south-east, north-east, north or east directions. The tank should be higher than floor level of the building. The door of bathroom should be in North or East direction. It should not be placed in south-west direction. In a bathroom there should be a small and airy window either in East, West or North direction. If the window is in south direction, it would have adverse effects on health. The color of bathroom tiles can be white, sky blue and light blue. It helps in giving a fresh look to bathroom. Avoid dark colors like black or red. The slope of floor in bathroom should be towards East or North direction.

Vastu For Pooja Room

Pooja room is a place where we worship God for peace and prosperity. Ishanya or north-east is governed by God and is an excellent location for pooja room. Locating 'Pooja room' in north-east brings prosperity, good health, wealth, happiness and peace of mind. North-east is auspicious for other reasons. In morning sunrays fall directly from north-east and give us positive energy.

Planning a Pooja Room: Doors and windows of pooja room should be in North and East. Doors of pooja room should have two shutters. The doors should not have any door closer. There should be a ventilator. Walls of pooja room should be painted in white, light yellow or light blue color. The floor of pooja room should be of white or off white marble. Cupboard for placing things should be in South or West of pooja room. It is beneficial to have a threshold in pooja room.

Interior of Pooja Room: Idols of God should be kept in north-east portion of pooja room. The idols should not face one another and the door of pooja room also. The two idols of same god should not be placed in pooja room. The idols should be 1 inch away from walls. 'Kalash' or water body is in North or East of the room. 'Deepak', lamp and 'Agni' kund are in south-east. We should face East while worshipping. Avoid keeping heavy idols in pooja room. Cluttered and broken idols should not be placed in pooja room. Avoid photos of dead people in pooja room. Keep pooja room clean and clutter free. There should be one pooja room in a house. The room should not be used for other purposes like storage or other room.

Vastu For Drawing Room

• The north direction is ideal for the construction of drawing room.

• The telephone should be placed in the southwest and other electrical appliances (except TV) are best in the southeast direction. The perfect place for keeping sofa lies in northwest. Avoid placing L-shaped sofa in your drawing room.

Vastu For Dining Room

East, south or west portion of the house are for the dining rooms. Stimulate your appetite by painting its walls with shades of pink or orange. • It is most profitable to have the dining room in the west side of the building. If it is in the east or the north it is tolerably good.

• While taking food, the head of the family should sit facing the east. Others should sit facing the east, the west or the north. However, nobody should sit facing the south. If it is done, unnecessary quarrels take place.

• Before we start taking our food it should be served to the cow, the birds and animals etc.

• The dining hall should have a door in the east, the north or the west. There should be no arches.

• The dining table should not be round shaped, egg shaped, hexagonal or of irregular shape. It should be square or rectangular in shape. It should not be attached to folding with the wall.

• There should be water in the north-east corner of the room. Wash-basin should be in the east or the north, leaving the south-east and the south- west corner.

• Nature portraits and paintings in the dining room makes the atmosphere happy.

• There should not be any attached toilet in the dining room. There is no harm in an attached room used for washing cloths or utensils.

• The door of the dining room and the main entrance door of the house should not be facing each other directly. The walls of the dining hall should have light blue, yellow, saffron or light green color.

Vastu For Guest Room

• The guest room should not be constructed in the southwest direction of the house because it is meant for the owner (Head of the Family) only.

• You can plan the guest room in the northwest direction of the house. It is a clear and suitable place for the guests to stay in your house.

• You may plan to construct the guest room in the southern direction as well. However, it will be better to consult a vastu expert before choosing this direction.

• You can place or plan the guest room at agneya corner (southeast corner) also. There is nothing troublesome with this direction.

• The door of the guest room should follow Vastu guidelines as well. Northeast door, facing east direction; Northeast door, facing north direction; Southeast door, facing south direction and Northwest door, facing west direction are the most preferred choices.

• If the guest room is situated at vayavya corner (northwest corner) or agneya corner, you can place the bathroom for this room at Nairuthi corner also, but don't forget to take advice of an experienced Vastu consultant beforehand.

• If the guest room is situated at vayavya corner, you must provide window at northeast corner, towards the north direction, or in the west direction.

• If the guest room is situated at agneya corner, you need to keep a window at south or southeast direction. Nothing serious is observed, even if you provide window at southwest direction. As it is, the agneya corner guest room crosses the middle point of the house, so if you keep the window in the southwest direction also, it will still be alright. Whether you want to provide an attached bathroom with the guest room or not is entirely your choice. Vastu shashtra neither advocates it, nor asks you to avoid it.

Vastu For Children's Room

Children act as the future of the household and hence the children's room should be in a place that strengthen them and gives them a mental stability that is required. According to Vastu, the kid bedroom should be in the northwest and southeast corners of the house. Avoid the southwest direction at all cost. Although one can also go for northeast direction of the house. These two directions of the house will give stability of the mind to the children. Other than these corners, in general the west, north and east sides of the house are good for bedrooms. The west side of the house is best for kids, keeping in mind that children grow quite fast. An east-facing bedroom is best for a newly married couple. The beds in the children's room can be in the southwest portion of the room and the heads should face in the east or south direction. Study room should be in the west portion of the house, but never be in the south-west and north west. • The doors of study room should be two shuttered & in the north-east (leaving the south- east), the north (leaving the north-west) or the west (leaving the south-west and the north- west) Windows are useful in the east, west & the north.

• The study room should be to the west side, leaving the south-west and the north-west corners. At this place we get the good effect of Budh (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Chandra (Moon) and Shukra (Venus). The Mercury increases the brain power. The Jupiter in creases ambition and curiosity. The moon helps in new thoughts and ideas and the Venus increases the talent. Wealth is obtained from oratory and writing.

• We should always sit facing the east or the north direction in the study room.

• Toilet should not be there in the study room. Bathroom is useful.

• The colour of the walls & tiles should be sky blue, cream, light green or white.

• The bookracks of the study room should not be in the north-west or the south-west corners. Books in the north-west corners are likely to be stolen or lost. Books in the south-west corners are rarely used. Of course the books should be divided into two small almirahs in the east and the north directions or it should be in the west.

• There is no harm in leaving a shrine or water pot in the north-east corner of the room. The height of the study room should be the same as that of other rooms.

• If we are not going to sleep in the study room and use it only for meditation or spiritual reading, the pyramidal shape of this room gives fantastic benefits.

Vastu For Kitchen

• The Kitchen sink should be placed in North East.

• The ventilators and larger kitchen windows should be in the East direction and smaller windows in the South.

• The seating arrangement of the owner should be done in such a manner, that he/she faces east or north direction, while carrying out his/her activities. South and west directions are not recommended, as they are considered to be the source of trouble and loss to the business.

• The emergency patients should be located in the South-west room for immediate healing.

• The beds should be arranged at correct places according to vastu shastra so that the patients place their heads in the South direction. • The main roads should be placed in the east or in the west direction. The entire plot should be right angled in shape. The main entrance should be in the east or the north-east but never placed in the south. The main construction should be in the southwest, the south or the west zone of the entire plot.

• The office of the institution should be in the south-east direction and the doors should be placed in the north or the east direction.

• The dimensions of the class rooms should be 1:2 or 1:1. The black board should be put in the west. The platform of the teacher should be at least 1.5 to 2 feet high.

• There should be no beams or cross beams in the class-room. Unnecessary gravitational force due to these beams can be avoided in this way. The entrance of the class-room should be in the east, the north or the north-east direction, it should not be placed in any corner. • The colour of the walls should be white, cream or light blue. The flooring slope should be towards the east.

• Dead stock rooms should be placed in the west or the south-west direction.

• The meeting hall should be located in the north with entrance doors in the east direction.

• Play ground should be placed in the east or the north direction.

• Boring or well should be located in the north-east direction.

• The admission room and the cashier's room should be placed in the north or the east side of the office.

• Stationary should be kept in cupboards which are placed in the south or the west direction.

• The library should be in the west direction.

Vastu believes that by keeping the entry to your house in positive directions and positioning a constant cosmic field, a positive energy is created which in turn leads to positive thinking, good health and prosperity.

Shoe Racks: The shoes and footwear should be placed in the south-west portion of the verandah or main hall only, and never in the bedroom. Shoes should never be placed in the north, south- east or east portion of the house.

Almirahs: Almirahs should be placed in the southwest of the room. If almirahs with valuables are to be kept, the best place for the same is in the southwest portion of the southwest room in the house. The almirahs with valuables and jewellery should open towards the north or east direction.

Beds: The beds should be placed more towards the southwest of the room but never in the southwest corner. One should sleep with head towards the south for sound sleep and better health.

Sofa Sets/Sitting: Sofa sets or chairs etc. should be kept in the south and west of the living room. The chairs should be so kept as for he owner of the house, or elder person in the house to face towards south or west direction while sitting.

Dining Table: Dining Table can be placed in the north west of the kitchen. The owners or elder person in the house should face towards the north or east while the guest should face south or west while eating.

Study Table: A study table can be placed in the southwest of the room and the person should face towards north or east while studying.

Mirrors: Mirrors should only be fixed on the north and east walls. No mirrors should be place/installed in study rooms and opposite to beds in the bedrooms.

Home Appliances: Heating appliances must be placed in the southeast of the room. Fridge should be placed in the northwest portion of the room. Television sets should never be placed in the southeast of the rooms.

Paint Colours: The kind of paint colours used in the house greatly effects the mood and general nature of the inmates. The psychology of the man can be disturbed is wrong type of colours are used. In entrance of the house, avoid red, black and gray colours, while using white, light blue and dark green colours are good.

Vastu recommends avoiding putting paintings depicting violence, sunset, shipwreck or portraits of demons. In case there's a river or drain flowing in a direction opposite to your house direction, putting a statue of dancing Ganesha on the north-east corner of the building facing west. For a naked wall just after entry into your home or office building, a portrait of Ganeshji can be placed. As much open space needs to be provided in the north-eat to welcome positive energy for this direction.

Apartments and the flats is now a very common sight in the big cities, thanks to the population explosion. These buildings are populated by a large number of people within a limited space. Besides such constructions are also proving economical while maximum utilization of the space is achieved. Here again, while building multistoried apartments and flats, attention must be paid to the plot of land and its location. East facing and north facing plots are excellent for such types of construction. But it should be noted that it is not possible to apply each and every principle of vastu Shastra to the construction of apartments and flats. Still it is necessary to excavate unwanted buried matter from the earth and follow common vastu principles.

• Principles regarding the land are equally applicable everywhere. Hence selection of land and excavation of unwanted buried matter must be conducted as per the dictates of vastu Shastra.

• Height of the last storey must necessarily be somewhat less than that of the first storey.

• Open space must be left all around the building. There should be more open space in the north and the east while in the west and the south it should be maximum.

• Main gate must be given in the north or in the east.

• Rectangular plot must be selected to build multistorey buildings. Such a shape of plot provides more common facilities and easy and better flow of traffic.

• Slope of the land must be given in the north-eastern direction.

• Car parking and common lawn etc. should be developed in the north-eastern direction.

• While building multistoried flats, big hotels or cinema halls, ample open space must be given in front of the building. Two separate gates should be provided for the entry and exit.

• Design of multistoried buildings should be such that the inmates of the lower floors could also get sufficient sun and fresh air.

• Lift must be provided near the staircase in the multistoried buildings. Stairs should have a dextral rotation.

• Water storage tank must be installed in the north-eastern corner of the roof in the multistoried buildings. Bore-well can be used as a source of water. Drainage must be covered.

• South-western corner of a multi-storey building should be higher the rest of the constructions.

• Each flat on every floor in a multi-storey building should be provided with enough ventilators and windows.

• Kitchen in each flat must be given in the south-east corner.

• Toilet and bathroom in each flat must be built in the south-west corner or in the south direction.

• Length and breadth of each flat should be exactly equal i.e. the flat should preferably have a square shape.

• Generator, electric switchboards, transformer etc. should be installed outside the apartments in the south- eastern corner.

• There should be no plants or trees exactly in front of the main gate. If you wish, you may plant basil and sandal in an open space.

• Playground and garden should be developed in the north or in the east of the apartment.

• Balconies too should be provided in the north or in the east.

• Security room must be built in the north or in the south.

• Apartments should not be painted in black, sky blue or red colours.
